Hot Honey Chicken and Waffles

Living in the south I have learned to love chicken and waffles, and it is nice to be able to cook it in my own home, because I rarely eat out even though I love restaurants. The chicken alone is a great recipe, and I often use it to make chicken tenders to go with other dishes. If you don’t own a waffle maker, you are going to need one to cook this dish. Something like this will do Hamilton Beach Flip Belgian Waffle Maker (26010).

I made this last night for dinner, and it had me doing a little multi-tasking in my kitchen. You will want to prepare the waffle batter first, then stick it in the fridge until you are ready to cook the waffles. Next you should make the hot honey sauce, and keep it warm until ready to serve. I like the chicken nice and hot when I eat it, so I do this part next. When the chicken is almost finished I then start the waffles. The waffles only take a few minutes to cook, so I just cover the chicken to keep it warm until I’m ready to eat.

Hot Honey Chicken & Waffles

Delicious homemade chicken and waffles!

Serves: 6-8 waffles

Hot Honey Sauce:

1/2 cup honey
1 tbsp sriracha chili paste
1 tbsp pure maple syrup
1/2 tsp onion powder
1/2 tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp salt

1 lb of chicken tenders
3/4 cup flour
2 eggs, beaten
2 cups panko bread crumbs
1/4 tsp seasoned salt
1/4 tsp onion powder
1/4 tsp garlic powder
more seasoned salt to taste,
freshly ground black pepper to taste

2 egg yolks
2 cups milk
1/3 cup oil
1 tsp vanilla extract
1/4 tsp salt
1 tbsp sugar
2 tsp baking powder
2 cups flour
2 egg whites

Hot Honey Sauce:

  • Mix all ingredients together in a small saucepan, cook over medium heat and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low and keep warm.

  • Rinse chicken and pat dry.
Season chicken to taste with seasoning salt and black pepper.
In a shallow dish combine flour, garlic powder, onion powder and seasoning salt.
Put eggs in a separate shallow dish and lightly beat eggs.
Place panko bread crumbs in a 3rd shallow dish.
Dredge chicken into seasoned flour mix, then dip into eggs, and then into panko bread crumbs.
Add about half an inch of oil to a skillet, and heat over medium heat. Place chicken tenders into heated skillet, and fry for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until cooked. You want it to look golden brown. (cover and keep warm in oven if needed.)

  • Preheat waffle iron and spray with cooking spray.
Beat egg whites until stiffly beaten. Set aside.
Combine all ingredients except egg whites in a large bowl, and beat at medium speed until smooth.
    Mix in egg whites.
Cook batter in waffle iron for about 4 minutes, or until done. Using the recommended amount for your waffle maker.
