Easy Pesto Sauce Recipe

Oh my gawsh, there is nothing like fresh homemade pesto! Am I right? With only 6 ingredients, and five minutes of your time, who in their crazy mind is buying store-bought pesto? After talking to some family and friends, I realized that a lot of people don’t know how to make pesto.

I have some amazing pesto dishes that I would like to share, but before I can do that I need to share this basic pesto recipe with you first.

Easy Pesto Sauce Recipe

Everyone has their own unique way to make pesto, but the ingredients usually don’t change. As long as you have the following 6 ingredients, you can make pesto!

  • Fresh Basil Leaves

  • Garlic

  • Pine Nuts, or Walnuts

  • Olive Oil

  • Parmesan Cheese

  • Lemon

I personally can’t make pesto without lemon, but I have seen some other people leave the lemon out. A squirt of fresh lemon juice, and a little lemon zest makes the perfect pesto!

Easy Pesto Sauce Recipe

The best way to make pesto is in the food processor, slowly adding the oil, while pulsing. I heard the blender works okay too, but the consistency is not the same.

By the way, the price of pine nuts is INSANE! Pesto sauce is typically made with pine nuts, but you may substitute it with walnuts. Those walnuts start looking really pretty after you see the price on the pine nuts, huh? Don’t fret, walnuts work just as well to make pesto. I almost always use walnuts instead of pine nuts, and the result is deliciousness in a bowl!

  2. You have a perfect pesto recipe, Amanda. I love making pesto sauce, especially during harvest season in the summer, but without cheese and lemon. I will definitely try it soon. Btw, I also freeze them in small plastic containers for the winter. Thanks for sharing your wonderful recipe. ~ Lani ?

I’m a walnuts kind of girl because I just can’t justify spending that much on a tiny bag of pine nuts. Awesome photos, btw! 🙂
